B&S Racing Celebrates Its 20th Year in Racing as the 2009 Season Opener Nears(Monclova, OH ) The roar of 410-cubic inch engines have come back to life in the United States for the first time in 2009 as Florida Speedweeks opens up a new sprint car racing season. But back in Ohio, Byron & his dad, Sam Reed, take a moment to reflect as the family operation readies its fleet of JEI Chassis/ Kistler Engines sprint cars before the start of their 20th season in racing. “It seems hard to believe that we’ve been racing 20 years already,” Byron reflects while still diligently working on that familiar black number five. “Looking back there are a few things I wish maybe I would have done differently, but overall I am satisfied with what we have accomplished in racing.”
The B&S Racing team has written one accomplished racing resume over the past two decades. Since first strapping into a sprint car back in 1989 at the age of 16, Byron has collected numerous feature wins around the Buckeye State and beyond including wins with top sanctioning bodies like the All Star Circuit of Champions (7 wins) and USAC (1 win). Only a World of Outlaws feature win has eluded the grasp of the now 35-year-old. Byron has never considered himself a points racer, but the ‘Monclova Missile’ has collected 9-track championships between Attica Raceway Park & Fremont Speedway while even sweeping both titles in the same year on several occasions (2003, 2007 & 2008). The desire to win still brews inside the Monclova, Ohio hot shoe.
A lot of nights are won with the preparation that a team puts in at the shop during the off-season and throughout the course of a season. B&S Racing looks to stay on top of the Northern Ohio sprint car scene as numerous late nights have been spent fine-tuning their machines. “With the help Kurt Brewer, Ron Romes, Dick West and my dad, we have been busy building a new JEI Chassis for the upcoming season and rebuilding our 2008 JEI that we ran last year. We’re also trying to get all of our spare components race ready in the off-season so we don't have to do a lot of thrashing in the pits during the year if we have a crash or breakdown,” Byron commented. “Our engine program looks very good for next year. Our existing motors are refreshed and race ready, plus Paul Kistler is working on a new motor combination that we plan on trying out.”
The team plans on running a schedule similar to years past with the emphasis on Attica Raceway Park on Fridays and Fremont Speedway on Saturday nights. New for the 2009 season is the inaugural year of the Kistler Racing Products Fremont/Attica Sprint Title (F.A.S.T.), which counts 22 unsanctioned events at Attica & Fremont towards an independent points fund separate from the two Track Championships currently available to teams. “My goal for this year is to win that F.A.S.T. Championship and be competitive each night we unload our car. I’ve had a continuous goal of trying to win 10 races in one season so I’ll be gunning for that as well.” Byron Reed and that familiar black #5 will kick off the team’s 20th anniversary season at Attica Raceway Park on March 27th. A strong contingent of winged warriors will be on hand to battle for early season bragging rights. Byron and the entire B&S Racing team encourage you all to attend Ohio’s opening night at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” venue to get your fix of dirt track racing. Catch up with Byron Reed on February 21st at the First Annual Racer’s Chili Challenge during the driver’s autograph session to be held at the Sandusky County Fair Grounds (Flower Building). This event benefits the Hoserville Ohio Benevolent Fund, Make-A-Wish, Racers Racing for a Cure, and the 2009 Fremont/Attica Sprint Title points fund. B&S Racing would like to thank those who help put that familiar black #5 on the track each weekend: JEI Performance Chassis, Kistler Engines, Pro Shocks, Schoenfeld Headers, and Black Swamp Media Group. |
